White Population of Groton

Free White Males            305
Free White Females
290
Total                                  595

___________________________________________

* The 19 males ages16-18 are also included in the 56 males ages 16-26.

** These Groton Totals were recorded on the census schedule, but some of the totals could not be reconciled with the individual family numbers recorded.  One obvious omission was in Foxwell Whicher’s family where one male 16 to 18 was recorded and no male 16 to 26 was entered (it is shown parenthetically in the transcription).  This makes a total of 57 males 16 to 26 instead of the 56 shown.  Males 26 to 45 total 56 instead of the 55 shown, so the total number of males is 307 instead of the 305 shown.  Apparently the 3 females under ten in Jacob Abbott’s family were missed in the total for females under ten (the number was somewhat obscured by the totals for the township preceding Groton) so the total number of females under ten is 108 instead of the 105 shown.  Females 10 to 16 total 42 instead of 41 and those 16 to 26 total 60 instead of 59, so the total number of females is 295 instead of the 290 shown. This would make the total population of Groton 602 instead of the 595 shown for 1820.

This ends the enumeration of the 1820 census of Groton, Caledonia County, Vermont.  JWB
